Asphalt is a very cost effective way to have a beautiful hard surfaced driveway that can last you many years with proper installation and maintenance.
There has always been talk about what the proper depth of asphalt should be. When it comes to your residential driveway we always want to talk about the compacted depth. This would be considered the final depth after the installation. The desired depth is 2.5" after compaction. This is because in order to get the proper density, that will give you strength, this is the most that asphalt can be placed at one time. Having a deeper depth of asphalt installed at one time will cause it to have poor density (hardness) and cause issues. That is why when you see roads paved they place 2 or 3 layers, this is because they can not place a 4 or 6 inch layer at one time. If they could do it, it would be great because we could save a lot of tax money for installation.
